Deckled / Privacy

Your words.
Your own.

Privacy, plainly explained.

This policy covers Deckled by Ember & Pine Software and this support website.

Effective September 12, 2026

Your journal stays on your device

Deckled stores your journal entries, dates, and preferences on your device. Search and word counts are processed there. No Deckled account is required. The app has no developer-operated journal cloud, advertising, analytics, tracking, or AI processing. Ember & Pine Software does not receive your entries, searches, backup passwords, or biometric data through the app.

Encryption and device protection

The native app stores journal entries in an encrypted database with a random key held in platform-protected storage. Optional app lock uses the operating system’s authentication. Deckled receives the result, not your face template, fingerprint, or device passcode.

The app is configured to exclude its private data from automatic operating-system backups. These controls depend on the platform. They cannot protect against every compromised device, malicious keyboard, screen capture, or physical camera. Your operating system and keyboard provider have their own privacy practices.

Backups and exports you choose

You can create a password-encrypted backup or export readable plain text or Markdown. The operating system hands files to a destination you choose, which may be another app or cloud provider with its own policies. Ember & Pine Software does not operate or receive these backups.

Export and import operations can create temporary files in app-private cache. Deckled attempts cleanup after file operations and on startup; an interruption can leave files until cleanup runs. Copies retained by your chosen destination or operating system are outside Deckled’s control. Plain text and Markdown exports are not encrypted by Deckled.

Optional local reminders

On iOS, reminders are optional and off by default. If enabled, the operating system schedules a generic writing invitation, never journal text. Deckled does not request push tokens, register for remote notifications, or use a notification server. Notification permissions and display settings are controlled by iOS.

Keeping and deleting your journal

Entries remain on your device until you delete them or remove the app’s data. Deleting an entry does not delete older backups or exported copies; remove those separately. Uninstalling the app, losing your phone, or losing an encryption key can make your journal unavailable. We cannot retrieve your local journal or reset a forgotten backup password. Complete erasure of every underlying flash-memory copy cannot be guaranteed.

When you contact us

Support and privacy contact: emberandpinesoftware@gmail.com. If you email us, we receive the address, message, and any other information you choose to send. We use this information to respond to and manage your request. Please do not send journal content, backup files, passwords, or encryption keys.

We use Gmail, provided by Google, to handle support email. Google processes these messages under its privacy policy. We delete routine support emails within 90 days after resolving a request, unless a longer period is needed for an ongoing dispute or legal obligation. Deleted messages may remain in Gmail’s Trash for up to 30 additional days; provider backup and retention practices are governed by Google. You can email us to request access, correction, or deletion of support information you provided.

Visiting this website

This informational website is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. It has no journal editor, upload form, advertising, or analytics scripts added by Ember & Pine Software. Our page code does not set cookies or use browser storage.

To deliver and protect the website, Cloudflare processes technical request information such as IP addresses, request URLs, and browser or network information. Its infrastructure may retain service or security logs. This is separate from Deckled’s local journal storage. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy for its practices.

Testing versions and changes

This policy describes Deckled’s native app and this support website. A separate browser development preview is not the native private journal: it stores writing without encryption in the browser profile. Development tools and TestFlight are also subject to their providers’ practices.

We update this policy when practices change and revise its effective date. Material new app data uses must be reflected in the app and its store disclosures before release.
